How PECT is enabling change for a sustainable future

This is a guest blog from our friends at PECT – the Peterborough Environment City Trust – a group that strives for positive green change in and around the city. From carbon offsetting to educating locals about how they can do their bit for the planet, the group has much to offer.

Take it away guys!

Listen up all you lift sharers out there! Now I know what you’re probably thinking, that you might not be THAT type of person – someone who’s passionate about recycling, or who keeps up with the latest environment initiatives, or who wants to save the planet three times over.

Well, without even knowing it, you are the next big saviour of our planet. So let’s delve a little deeper. Thanks to your positive action in joining Liftshare you are not only saving the money in your back pocket but also the earth’s resources – and for that we are very grateful.

Who is ‘we’? Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is an independent environmental charity helping to create a cleaner, greener, healthier Peterborough and beyond. Did you know that in the UK we’re currently using resources at such a rate that we need three planets to support us? But yes, you’ve guessed it; we’ve just the one. This means that travelling sustainably is a great starting point, and there’s plenty more that can be done too.

At PECT we are all about making things a bit better through the various projects we run. With more than 21 years’ experience, PECT delivers ground-breaking and innovative projects of local, regional and national significance, enabling change for a sustainable future. We try and put sustainability at the heart of what we do and aim to make a positive influence through the projects we offer.

Sustainable transport is just one of the ten environment themes we focus our projects on, and we run our annual sustainable transport-themed Green Festival in Peterborough city centre every May. Another project – Warm Homes Peterborough – assists city residents to enjoy affordable warmth, whilst also lowering the carbon footprint of Peterborough communities.

Wherever you are based in the UK, we can also help your business to operate more sustainably, to improve its eco reputation whilst cutting costs, with our not-for-profit green accreditation scheme Investors in the Environment (IIE). And before you think we have forgotten about the younger generation, think again, as PECT supports the delivery of Environmental Education in schools.

We also help to build stronger, more sustainable communities with our national green skill share initiative Greeniversity. In a nutshell, Greeniversity helps people get together to share practical eco skills and information. Whether it’s cooking, growing, making or mending – anything goes as long as it’s green or helps build community spirit.

This is just a small selection of some of the projects we run. So, if you fancy planting a tree one day with our Forest For Peterborough crew, volunteering with one of our exciting projects or simply offering a donation, just get in touch! For further details, visit www.pect.org.uk.
