Liftshare works with 12 other countries on European app project ‘SocialCar’

SocialCar is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project, aiming at producing a continent-wide journey-planning app which includes liftsharing options.

Working alongside engineer and public authorities and representatives from Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Poland, Switzerland, FYR Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain and Belgium, Liftshare is lending its expert knowledge and experience to help develop this new product.

The aim is to produce a complete end-to-end journey planner on a mobile app, including public transport, car club and carsharing options, with added social media integration to give real-time journey and route information.

The app will start being tested in 10 sites from September, including Edinburgh, Turin, and Brussels. From there, it’s hoped to be tested, ready and live from October 2017 across the continent. The app will be for short-haul city trips to start with, then can be developed further for longer travels. Eventually, you’ll even be able to make payment for your travel bookings through the app, direct to the transport provider.

Available from May in 4 languages – English, Italian, French and Dutch – the API will be made available in English on OpenSource, so software developers can study and make changes to the code for their own projects.

As the UK’s largest carsharing community, we’re offering our support and expertise to make this project successful. We’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest developments and help you navigate the app once it’s live.
