Your guide to this week’s big UK events (Dec 15 edition)

Happy Monday Liftsharers and welcome to our final UK events line-up of 2014.

By now you surely have all of your Christmas shopping and gift-buying done – we might be getting a bit optimistic here – and you’re ready to kick back and have some fun, so here’s a list of neat events on this week and links to people lift-sharing to them. Remember, if you want to get somewhere cheap, you only need to ask our members offering lifts. It’s that simple!

Speaking of events, if you missed our big festival 2015 interview with Kes, editor of Festival Mag, it’s well worth checking out. Our chat was full of big rumours and predictions for the summer festival season and beyond.

Right then, let’s go out with a bang. Here are our big event picks for the week:

All Week: London International Horse Show

December 16-22 @ Olympia, London

Dubbed ‘The Best Equestrian Christmas Party,’ the London international Horse Show is more than just mince pies and showjumping. It sees three world number one show-jumpers competing among some of the finest riders the planet has to offer in a week of events. Big names include Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, Show Jumper Scott Brash, and Boyd Exell, while Dujardin will be taking part in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup. Put simply: if showjumping and horse events are your bag, you need to be in the stands.

It’s Christmas with a historical twist, bringing education and fun to Corbridge Roman Town. Hosted by English Heritage’s Curator of Roman Collections, Frances McIntosh, the event includes two talks that dive deep into this ancient Roman tradition – created to honour Saturn, the god of seed-sowing. Expect plenty of insight and a Q&A session at the end.

Sunday: Burning the Clocks

December 21 @ Brighton Beach

To mark the shortest day of the year, people from far and wide are invited to Brighton beach to literally burn clocks. Well, not really clocks – more like paper lanterns and hand-crafted creations that will be torched in a grand bonfire following a precesion through the city. It’s a fun community event now in its 21st year, and 2014’s theme is ‘Urbano – The City’ to celebrate the way people congregate in towns and cities. Be sure to check out the lifts on offer to Brighton below and get making your lantern.
