5 tips to save money relating to fuel

Save money on fuel with Liftshare

We’ve heard of “No spend January” and although it sounds like a fantastic money-saving concept… Is it achievable? Liftshare wanted to give our members some real money-saving tips linked to the UK’s fuel prices hitting all time highs.

With our bank balances in their usual January sorry state, we want to make sure we’re here for you and encourage our Liftshare members to help each other during this time when our purse strings are tighter than ever before.

Counting down from 5…

5. Shop Around for Fuel

Super markets used to often offer the cheapest fuel, but it’s important to shop around. Fuel companies are offering competitive pricing, so make sure you have a look around before filling up your car.

4. Drive Smoothly

Repeated acceleration and braking has a big impact on fuel usage, which can easily happen when driving in busy urban areas or following traffic on country roads. To ensure you are driving as fuel-efficiently as possible, the RAC says “the best advice in urban areas is to change up through the gears as quickly as you can with the lowest revs possible, probably at around 2000rpm. Remember: the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses.”

3. Stick to the speed limit

Breaking speed limits will not only result in a potentially hefty fine, or points on your drivers license, but will also add to your carbon footprint. Millions of people in the UK are guilty of busting the speed limits on our roads, adding even more tonnes of carbon emissions each year to our atmosphere.

Not only will reducing your speed help your carbon footprint, it will also save you money on fuel.

Generally speaking, there is no one driving speed which is optimum for fuel economy.

We’ve all heard over the past decade that “56mph is the optimum speed”, but the RAC tell us that this was due to the old fuel consumption test being run at three speeds: urban, 56mph and 75mph – and 56mph was always, unsurprisingly, the most efficient of these. They say, typically, cars are most efficient at 45-50mph.

2. Maintain your vehicle

It’s particularly important to make sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure as indicated in your owner’s manual. Tyres that are under or over inflated can both affect fuel economy. Different loads will affect tyre pressures, so make sure you check before you travel – Especially if you have a car full of carsharers!
