The impact of car-sharing for NHS Borders

NHS Borders is one of the fourteen regions of NHS Scotland. It provides healthcare services in the Scottish Borders area. NHS Borders is headquartered in Melrose with around 2,000 staff travelling to site.

With free parking offered on-site for employees and 60% of staff living outside a 4 mile radius with poor road networks into work and limited public transport options, car usage was high and parking was a real issue. Historically the hospital used an in-house managed car-sharing platform, but it wasn’t working for them.

So NHS Borders decided to migrate to a Liftshare system. They introduced a clear parking policy, phased an increase in dedicated car-share bays from 4 spaces to 98; leaving these spaces reserved for car-sharers until 1pm providing greater flexibility and with Liftshare’s help promoted car-sharing. They also promoted walking and cycling for those who lived closer by. Since the Liftshare scheme was introduced, car-sharing has been the most effective travel option used.

The outcomes to-date have included:
260 members registered; with 195 confirmed as sharing a regular journey – this has almost doubled the number of car-sharers registered compared to the original in-house system
83% of journeys added have been matched
• Liftshare data which is monitored and up-to-date
